
More of our conversations lately start the same way: someone's looking at a video wall for their lobby, sanctuary, or conference room, and the term "direct view LED" keeps coming up. It's replacing projection and older LCD video walls in a lot of the spaces we work in, and for good reason. But not all dvLED is built the same, and not every installer is going to tell you that. This is what we actually look for before we recommend a wall to a client, and why two quotes for the "same" size wall can land at very different prices.
What dvLED Is, and Why It's Worth the Conversation
Direct view LED is different from the LED TV most people have at home. On a normal screen, the LEDs sit behind an LCD panel and light it up. On a dvLED wall, the LED itself is the pixel. There's no panel in front of it.
Because of that, these walls get built in pieces. Individual panels or cabinets are tiled together on site, which means we can build a display in almost any size or shape: a video wall in a lobby, a curved surface behind a stage, a column, whatever the room calls for. Unlike an LCD video wall, there are no bezels breaking up the image between panels.
For the rooms we work in most, two things make this worth the conversation. The first is brightness. Sanctuaries with stage lighting and lobbies with big windows will wash out a projector image, and dvLED handles ambient light without a fight. The second is lifespan. A well-built wall will run 50,000 to 100,000+ hours before you're thinking about it again.
That's the pitch you'll hear from anyone selling dvLED. What actually separates a good wall from a bad one, and a good installer from one who'll leave you with a problem in 18 months, is a different conversation entirely.

What Actually Separates a Good Install From a Bad One
I get asked why two quotes for the same size wall can be so different, and it almost always comes down to what's inside the panel, not what's on the spec sheet.
Component quality
A lot of the price gap comes down to how the LED chips themselves are wired. Higher-end panels use gold wire bonding. Cheaper panels use copper. Copper works fine on day one, but it corrodes over time. That corrosion is what causes dead pixels and color drift a year or two down the road, right about when a client calls us asking why their wall "looks off" all of a sudden. Gold costs more up front and doesn't have that problem. This one decision, made at the manufacturing level, explains more "why did this go bad" service calls than anything else.
Pixel pitch and viewing distance
Pixel pitch is the spacing between LED clusters, and it's the number that determines how close you can stand to a wall before you start seeing the individual pixels instead of the image. Smaller pitch means higher resolution and a closer viewing distance, but it also costs more. Larger pitch is fine, and cheaper, if people are viewing from further back. A simple rule of thumb: a 4.0mm pitch is a safe, standard choice if your audience is sitting around 40 feet away. If someone's quoting you a pitch that doesn't match how the room is actually used, that's worth a second conversation.
Drivers and refresh rate
The driver is the component controlling how each LED fires, and it's not something most buyers think to ask about. Cheaper drivers show up as visible flicker, especially on camera. For a church that livestreams, this is a big deal. A wall that looks perfectly smooth in person can show banding or flicker the moment it hits a camera feed. Smooth motion and clean, readable text both depend on driver quality and refresh rate, and it's invisible until it isn't.
Weight and structural planning
dvLED cabinets are heavier than most people expect, and they draw a lot of power.
We've seen proposals that didn't fully account for the actual weight of the panels being specified. For a wall-mounted or suspended install, that's a real safety issue, not just an inconvenience.
Before anything gets installed, the mounting approach, whether it's wall-mounted, suspended from the ceiling, or ground-stacked, needs to match the actual weight of the equipment going up. This is one of the first things we check on any proposal that crosses our desk.
Color matching across panels
Even with a good design, individual LEDs vary slightly from panel to panel. Higher-quality manufacturers sort and "bin" their LEDs tightly so a wall looks uniform edge to edge. Lower-quality components have more variance, which shows up as a visible patchwork of slightly different colors or brightness levels across the wall. Once you know to look for it, you can't unsee it, and it's one of the clearest signs of a corner-cutting install.
Where projection still wins
dvLED isn't the right answer for every situation, and we'll tell you that up front. Very large canvases, or projects where budget and specific resolution needs point a different direction, can still be better served by projection. Anyone telling you dvLED is always the answer isn't giving you the full picture.

Who Passed Our Bar, and Why
We don't just quote whatever a manufacturer sends over. Before we'll put our name on a wall, we look for US-based support, component quality that holds up, and a manufacturer willing to build a custom solution instead of pushing us toward whatever's sitting in their catalog.
Two brands have consistently passed that bar for us: SquareV and SBC.
SquareV is engineered and supported entirely in the US, out of Franklin, Tennessee. They use higher-end components, gold contacts and all-metal cabinets, and they'll work with us directly on custom design and onsite support when a project calls for it.
SBC is engineered in China, which keeps the cost down (they use copper contacts rather than gold), but they've built out solid US support through a dealer partner, and they still do genuine custom cabinet work rather than forcing every project into stock sizing.
That last point, custom cabinet building, matters more than most people realize. On a recent project we worked on, the wall could have been built with 180 stock cabinets, or 80 with a slightly better off-the-shelf option. Building it with custom cabinets instead brought that down to 28. Fewer cabinets means less product cost and a shorter install, which means real savings passed on to the client.
A lot of the bigger manufacturers and installers in this industry run a turn-and-burn model, and that's exactly why this gets missed on so many proposals.
They don't want to slow down for a custom job, so they don't offer one. It matters more who you hire than which brand name ends up on the spec sheet.
